In medical terms they call that 'complications'.

If you have any operation, they always send at least three people to go through the same stuff: "Are you allergic to any anaesthetics?" "Are you on drugs?" "Has it been explained that there is a slight chance of complications?" (see above) I like to feel that in the case of eye ops they slip that stuff in: "Has it been explained that you may - nay, will - find yourself able to see the dead/through the eyes of a serial killer/the true shape of the souls of those around you/death?"
